Default 20mb connection, but down to 10 when connected to router?!

hey guys, baffling question here.

As you may ir may not have noticed, I've had some bother getting a modded modem up and running. Finally I have got it (and I will reply to my own post detailing how for others benefit when I egt this working) and when it's plugged into the ethernet port on my computer, hey prsto 20mb connection.

However when I connect my router (Netgear) I only get a 10mb connection (I am on a 10mb subscription, coincidence?). Why is this? I assume it must have something to do with router settings.

I have tried (on the router) using Default mac settings, computer mac settings, and custom settings (putting in the mac address I'm currently using).

What could be the problem?

Cheers gents.

I have similar results when connecting via wireless router but this could be down to many things affecting the signal

Try changing the wireless channel and like wavetech said the firewall, it could be limiting the speed someway, Fortunatly i dont share my 20mb connection xD
Just the 2mb :P

so did u think of it this way? 20mb is going to modem then on to router u may then have a b/g wireless setup that gets u 54mbps ie 5mbs, so 5 mbs is ur max, if on n, u get 10mbs

are u going pc, router modem, or pc wireless modem?

Yeah I recommend that you get a router thats compatible with dd-wrt firmware. dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices
There are some as cheap as 30 quid. Can't go wrong with them.

Check your WAN port is configured for 100baseT or full auto, I had one once that was configured by default for only 10baseT
