Modem no longer working!! Please help a noob!

I bought a modem off my cable man about 18 months ago. Its an ntl:250 modem which was originally 10meg but shot up to 20mb when they upgraded everyone about a year ago. Yesterday it stopped working as when I open my browser it now asks me to regisiter my product. It says I have to contact virgin to activate broadband on my line

Can anyone tell me what I have to do to get it back up and working again??

There is nothing written on the modem (like on my digibox) just the original mac address printed and a few other numbers. My enet and power lights are solid green.

Do I need to get some sort of lead and some codes? I don't have a serial port on my laptop which may be a problem but I can use other pcs. I've had a look around the forums but alot of the info here is either over my head or relates to adapting a normal modem to be used rather than updating one that has already been done before. Also I'm using a neighbors pc at the moment so I haven't got very long!!

Sounds like your MAC has stopped-you will need to put another one on using a MAC Changer programme(in downloads) You'll need to scan 4 MACs using DHCP Sniffer-0.2.3.91b(also in downloads)-you can do this in your neighbours if need be & try out on your own. Modem can't be connected to router whilst sniffing tho

Also just thought that the guy may have changed the password (see if it's written underneath) which will stop you getting in. The default for Infinity is:
Username: admin
Password: infinite

thanks, I'm pretty clueless with ntl. how do i enter the router settings? is it 192.168.00.01 like on a netgear adsl router i have?

Do the other mac's need to be ntl? is so how do I tell?

I'll have a little look at that program now. Do I need a special lead of some sort to use it or can the modem just be connected via usb?

I would imagine you have Infinite software on it if it's 18 months old-try to login to it on 192.168.100.1 - it should come up with a password page so try admin/infinite. Then you can see on config page that it prob doesn't accept DHCP offer-You will have to use a MAC changer prog to set a new one but you will need to obviously scan for these 1st using the DHCP scanner as said. All done over ethernet cable by the way

I'm sure that isn't good news, but what are my options now?

Its definately Infinite software as the username/password pop up states it. Is there any others I can try just incase its an older version or anything? My suspicions are that whoever modded the modem before changed the user/pass though.

after a little searching I've found another default password. User: Infinite Pass: SetValue. I'll try this one too but a lot of posts I've read advise changing the password so nthell can't update and lock you out of your modem. I suspect thats what my cable guy has done originally.

i take it I'll have to re-flash my modem with infinity again if I can't work out the user/pass. Can anyone confirm this?

I'm a noob as regards to cable modems. I really need my internet up and working asap as I can't keep using my neighbors pc! How much effort it is to get it up and working again? can anyone give me any ideas please?!?!?

The only way I know is to connect to 250 Configurator via Max232(this WONT work with just ethernet) and type in your new password/username then hit change-you should then be able to get into it with your new password/user in ambit or MAC changer. If there's another way I don't know

fair play mate, i've been reading the forums for ages and everything just pointed to reflashing the modem which will probably take longer than any spare time I have.

Search them in your neighbours if he's ok with it? Use the DHCP Sniffer-0.2.3.91b and save MACs to a notepad file-try to leave as long as you can & make sure there's no router attached-needs to be directly plugged in.

Also don't you have to get macs from a different area?
