Total noob please help

Hi, i have been reading the cable modem bible as i cannot find the haynes guide anywhere. anyways i think i can do most of what the actual tut is telling me to do, the only thing i am unsure about is the config file. i understand how i get a mac address and tftp but dont understand what im meant to do with a config file and how im meant to do it. if anyone could please help me out and tell me what im meant to do.

Im getting mixed up with the ubr and config haha probably sounds like im stupid but i dont understand where to get my config file and where to put it.

Oh and serial to, where would i find this ? just to note i am not asking for a mac address i know i can be banned for that i am simply asking where i would find my serial to enter and where i would find my config ?

Hi m8 The config file is what tells your modem what service you have and other settings your modem gets it from your Isp from a server that is your tftp!

all you need is your mac address make sure it is not from your UBR get a mac from around 1.5 to 2 miles away.

Then all you need is your DL Freq
The freqs are different for ex-TW EX-CW and pure
if you have a subbed modem you can get this from their!
also remember you will have to disable BPI
and have the proper annex set

What modem do you have

if you have one with infinite software then use ambit config tool to set it up its much more easy.

If you want to try forcing a config file to get better speed on a lower mac address then have a look at the config files sticky at the top of the forum page!

Hi sorry I work nights, just seen the reply now, so are you saying i do not need a serial number or config ? i just need my mac and tftp ? see what i was going to do is my sister lives about 2 miles away and she has 2mb i pay for 20mb and was going to see if i could flash a 5100 modem as i hear its the easiest to start on. I was going to use my mac address from mine and obviously she would have her own tftp. If thats all i need that good because i can get all that no problem the only thing throwin me off is this part of the tutorial

I dont know what a serial is because it doesnt really explain that. Oh if i was to use my mac for my sister would my internet be affected in anyway ? like download speed or anything like that ? i know i ask alot of questions but there isnt any good tutorials out there and wizardmods is down at the moment.
Haha oh and how do i go about disable BPI thats is also not on this tutorial doesnt even mention it actually, Hmm i also just reaslied the tut im reading is flashing with sigma, will that work for me or am i meant to do it with infinite ?

yano what i think im just guna give up and stick to doing my digital tv, i know what im doing there haha. If i buy a modem with infinite flashed already done to it do i just have to put my mac and tftp in because i see these sell on ebay for like £20

if you buy 1 you will need a mac and ambitconfig0.971beta software, that will put a 20 meg config on for you, but try to buy a 250 or 255, if they work in your area

im in telewest liverpool so i believe im docsis, i know thats the case with the tele anyway at the moment i have a webstar little black one would a 250 work in my area?

for the 5100 you need blackcat, and solder a header to modem (not hard) a mac,and a config file very easy

its a subbed modem, wud it be easier for me to buy a 250 or 255 because its sounds like you saying all i pritty much have to do is flash it put in a mac addy tftp and dl freq is that correct ? if so i might give that ago
