Doubtful if you require any drivers, as the drivers are usually part of the firmware in the DVD Writer.
What make/model is your DVD Writer, and is it recognized in Device Manager?
Is it just the Autoplay that isn't working?
When you go into My Computer and check the DVD Writer is the CD/DVD recognized?
Check that your cables are connected correctly, then try running the DVD Writer as a Master and on a separate cable.
If this fails you can try doing a firmware upgrade but has DVD Writers are so cheap you might as well replace it.

dvd writer model is maxtor 6L200md all drives etc seem to be ok when checked. The problem is when a cd is inserted it is not recognised as though a cd has been inserted.
Thanks

Does it recognize DVD's and can you burn to blank CD's?
If it is all CD's that it can't recognize you could try using a disk cleaning kit but if the DVD Writer is quite old I would simply replace it as a new DVD Writer is less than £20.
I wasn't aware of any Maxtor DVD Writers as Maxtor are more famous for their hard drives, and when doing a search for Maxtor 6L200md all I'm getting is information on a SATA Hard Drive model.
If possible remove your hard drive from the case, it will mean disconnecting your PC, removing the side panels, removing the poser and IDE cable, and removing the 4 screws holding it in the bay.
You can then slide it out and look at the information on the DVD Writer, this will give more precise details of the make/model.
Is it connected using a IDE cable or is it one of the newer SATA DVD Writers?
Did you build your PC yourself or was it bought as a complete unit, in which case do you know the series and model number?

Does it read a DVD?
Open up your computer and check that the IDE cable is fully pushed in to both the DVD Writer and the Motherboard.
If possible try the burnt CD in a different drive, any CD player, or another PC or Laptop, to see if it works.
If it is the DVD Writer that is faulty, and one part of it has failed, you can try a CD/DVD lens cleaner or try a firmware upgrade, which can be found at the manufacturers website, just download the latest firmware for your model and run it.
It sounds like part of the DVD Writer has failed, and depending on how old it is you might as well just replace it, as I've said they are now reasonably cheap and you can pick a new one up for less than £20.
