Default Videoguard?

I'm over in Norway and installed a 1m dish with a Freesat box (not sky)

I can get a really good signal on Astra 2A,2B and Eurobird but nothing from Astra 2D, tried a 1.8m dish and still no joy.

I've now given up on trying to get BBC etc. for free over here so was thinking about trying to get sky, so I could at least see some UK stuff.

From what I've seen Sky 1, sports, UKTV, Dave etc. are all on 2A/2B & Eurobird with videoguard.

If I get a sky box with a sky card will I be able to view them or do I need a full sky subscription?

Any help would be appreciated as I suffering severe withdrawal symptoms....

You will need to pay a subscription to gain access to these channels, and will need a bank account and UK address, plus the box will have to be connected to the phoneline.

If you buy your own equipment, say a second hand box off ebay you can just ask for a card which comes with the option of not having it connected to the phone line

My box has never been connected to the phoneline

Even with Sky supplied kit the box will not have to be connected to a phone as long as long as

1) you only have a single box and dont want multiroom
2) you pay the 25 quid no phone line extra fee.

Your best bet though is to buy your own box and ask for a "Second hand box contract" - no phone line needed for that.

Thats what i did. I'd rather pay £25 for a second hand box rather than give it to the goons over at Sky. I pay them enough as it is

Surly with or without a sky box you can get BBC & ITV. If you cant get it on a FTA box you ain't going to get it on a sky box. You need to be in the footprint to get the 2D satellite.

Aparently the MVision ST-5 can now read NDS cards and you can even share the card via a home network as long as you have another ST-5 hooked to your network, cheaper option than multiroom!

Igore12 is in Norway and cant get 2D. To get a reasonable selection of entertainment channel he probably needs a sky subscription - lets be honest many of the fta channels off 2D are complete drivel.

Spot on there... I manually tuned in every FTA channel there was using my freesat box and it was complete drivel (well most of it, did find an all time classic horror movie last night on Zone horror)

Anyway, Analoguesat is right, I way outside the 2D footprint. People do have a reception in some places, but I must be in a bad spot as with a 1.8m dish and 0.3dB invacom lnb I couldn't even get a sniff of 2D. I'm not prepared to go to a 2.4m dish etc.

So in order to get some decent choice I need the Sky package to get Sky 1/2/3, UKTV stuff, discovery etc. Kids TV and so on. It's important for my kids to keep them in touch with British culture aswell.

I put up my 1m dish last night and got nearly as many channels, so the big dish will be going on sale once I've sorted out the sky package.

I have a UK account and my parents have sky, I was thinking about getting multi-room, would that not work. Thought you would just get another box and card? If not then I'll contact my local dealer about a second sky contract on the same address etc.

I expect "Sky Multiroom" requires 'phone connection (on a UK number) to prevent fraudulent use of the receivers at different premises to gain the subscription discount.

If there's a receiver that can do cardshare that may be more economic than multiple subscriptions, not sure of the legality outside of the UK.
