Open Hyperterminal...
Start menu > All Programs > Accessories > Communication

Name the connection Ambit.
Select TCP/IP Winsock as connection and server as 192.168.100.1
The it will say `Authorised person only....etc`
Then put in the username and password for the modem and you can enter commands and access the modem.
If you can't access via hyperterminal, you may not have the firmware to access the modem and then its either JTAG or MAX232 to update it.

which port number? and i take it 192.168.100.1 is the host address....do i have to disconnect modem from pc or just leave it connected

The modem should be connected via network cable as normal, port number leave on what it is already.

unable to connect to 192.168.100.1 port 23 is the message that im getting when i select tcp/ip winsock as connection

but when i type 192.168.100.1 into address bar i can access my modem configuration

If you cannot access the modem via telnet, then you don't have firmware on it that you can access that way, ie no telnet access. You will need either JTAG or MAX232 hardware to access and update the modem.
