Default NIC MAC Address

I bought a hacked modem to use on VM. I used SMAC to alter my NIC MAC address but the modem is picking a completely different one to my spoofed and normal MAC. when I change it in my modem settings and click save and reboot, I can then no longer access my modem settings? Any suggestions?
