Default CNBC Europe drops ‘Europe’ branding

US-based financial news channel CNBC will remove the “Europe” tag from the name of its European network on September 29.

This does not mean that CNBC Europe will in future take over more programmes from its US parent service, CEO Mick Buckley told German industry publication Horizont. “We will continue to offer more than nine hours of programmes from our headquarters in London on weekdays,“ he said.

According to Buckley, the reason behind the name change was the economic markets becoming increasingly global. “When we launched 10 years ago, it was necessary to differentiate our European service from the US channel. Since then, a lot has changed in the way in which all of us pursue our businesses,” he explained. “Each story, which we cover, has global impact. Companies don’t just only look in European countries for investment opportunities any more.”

With the revised branding, the channel would reflect the growing importance of global business news, Buckley added.
