Default NIC MAC Question

If I spoof my NIC MAC and reboot, my modem doesn't always pick it up by itself but when it does, one digit is different. If I edit it to be exactly the same as my spoofed MAC, I cannot access my modems settings nor access the net and I have to unplug my Modem for around 1/2 hour.

So is it correct that my NIC MAC should be 1 digit different to the one I set in SMAC?
