Hi,
I recently bought a modified cable modem. I have read all around the forums for information and gathered what I need to get this set up. My problem is this: After I bought the modem, the guy I bought it off said "DONT PLUG YOUR ORIGINAL MODEM BACK IN!!!" which I had never heard about before. I just got a SB4200 because it was quite cheap and should do what I need. It has Sigma latest installed on it. I have currently got the internet through the Virgin STB (2Mb) and the basic package of channels (just waiting for EX5000 to arrive). Is this true what he said? I was just thinking that if my new modem is to ever say, break, or go offline, or anything, I would like to be able to put my original Virgin STB back up to get the internet back. Thanks for any help given =) Tom |

some
say dont some say it dont matter wot you have to think of is that the modded modem will send a message saying connected to this pc ( or similar ) and then you plug unmodded one in and it says the same thing so there is a risk but wot risk dont we take ??up to you |

You have both the VM STB and the modded cable modem plugged in at the same time? I asked the guy I bought it off if I could use my wireless router along-side this modem and he said yes, but I dont know if this will work.

if you put your hacked mod on the same pc as your subbed modem then you nic mac address will stick out like a sore thumb.
so change your nic with one of the software apps in the download section like NIMAC changer or TMAC |

Ahh ok thanks. So is this right/would this work and be ok:
VM coax to splitter split 1 goes into VM STB split 2 goes into modded cable modem Configure modded cable modem using my computer and change my MAC address (change the last few digits to anything random in hex) Once all configured, give my router the same MAC address my computer was using and plug that in instead of my computer, then put my computers MAC address back. Is this right? Also, would this setup work? VM Coax Cable to splitter Split 1 VM STB Split 2 into another splitter Split 1 into cable modem Split 2 into Eurovox STB Would this downgrade my sigal significantly? Also what purpose would I have of keeping my VM STB plugged in? |

thats how i do it,most people do not realise the broadband is on the same cable as the TV !.
yes so use splitter, take one to the modem one to the box and bobs your uncle and fannys a C**t. ! and regarding the signal you should have no probs there either. if you do just buy a signal booster. |

*waits to finish work to see if it has been delivered at home yet* god this waiting is horrrrrrrrible!!!! lol
So.......if i wanted to use my original VM STB for the internet again, do I just assign my router its original MAC address then plug the cable into the VM STB? |
