Hello people, Im a noob, Yes. Please excuse me.

I am intrested in buying a 'NTL VIRGIN AMBIT 250 255 CABLE MODEM FLASHED' But i am wondering what i have to do once i have baught it of febay. I have heard somthing about a mac swap. I have seen the Hynes modem guide. But doesnt show how to get a mac code or where to enter it etc. Or if it does i dont under stand it.
Also, i only have v*rgin TV and phone do i need the internet or not? cause i can just plug the modem into the coax cable that i have split.

yes split the cable and take one lead to the modem.
you need to find out a few things to get things working.
1. find the TFTP address for your area,look in the stickies should find info there.
2.if you have a friend who lives very near see if you can persuade him to use his modem to gather info on your segment details, you will need this to trade for your first mac.
again check stickies for info.
you are going to have to do some reading to start to understand whats involved.

UPDATE: Luckly one of my mates a couple of doors up from me has vi*gin. He has gave me acess to his modem. He says its motorolla surfboard.

you will need to look for a link on google or read the haynes manual by cable guy to explain how to find you ip and what segment of your area you are in.
basically there are normally 8 segments to an area if say you are in 03,then you need to trade with someone from 01.02,03,04, anyone except your own

Ah as looking at the guide. Do i need to open up my modem and buy a special cable? To put in my new mac address?

if your mate helps you then you dont need to trade for a mac address.
use `DCHP SNIFFER` to sniff you area this will give u working macs.
use the ambit config 097 tool to flash the settings to the modem.

M8 the modem might be flashe but you have still got to config it !
with tftp ip, mac addy,provider and change the user/password on the modem when you start.

regarding your uncle ask him if you can borrow his mac addy to get you on the net so you can sniff for your own thats what i did.
