Default DVI to HDMI on Sharp Aquos

I currently have my pc connected to a Sharp Aquos 42XD10E via DVI to SVGA connection and i am getting a good picture at 1280x1024 resolution.

I bought a DVI to HDMI cable to try and get a better resolution. The contol panel for my Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS graphics card recognised the Sharp HDMI TV and states it's natural resolution as 1920x1080. But when I change the resolution above 640x480 the picture turns fuzzy and reddish (similar to 8 bit colour).

How do I set up my pc/tv correctly and is there any benefit in changing from my current setup to DVI/HDMI?
