Yes that box is the standard type and it would be fine for what you want it for although as far as i am aware you do have to subscribe to Sky to get Setanta through satellite, although i may be wrong

Sport bores the pants off me so i've never subscribed to it. I'm sure the other members will let you know in the next few hours

That box is well over priced though if you ask me, you would be better getting the 500s Its better value for money.

The only thing you will need a Sky box for is activating the Sky card and thats it, you might aswell buy an old pace one for £5

as far as i know from other forums if someone rings setanta and tells them they don't have Sky,then setanta will send you a viewing card within a week, put it in your sky box and then subscribe over the internet and you have setanta within a hour!

aparently the most important thing to do when subscribing to setanta is not to contact sky for any reason, just contact setanta and they will sort you out

that's good about the pace box,or could i put a viewing card into a friends box and activate it that way! plus a expired sky card will get you setanta or even a fta card i think

plus would i have to put the card into a skybox regularly to update the card?

If you activate the card in a friends box it will knock your friends card off his box so he will be unable to receive any premium channels on his Sky box.

A card is paired to a receiver to stop you receiving anything higher than the basic six mix package. If the card is placed in a different receiver which its not paired up to.

Your friend will not be able to get any sports, movies or on demand services if you activate your card in his box. He will just get a banner stating it is the wrong card for the box

You will need to have your own Sky box to activate the card if you intend to use it in a Dreambox.

You do not need to subscribe to sky to get setanta throughy a digibox/minidish and expired viewing card. You can put the card intpo any other sky digibox and get the setanta channels but if you try to get racing uk it wont show it but it will say the viewing card is in the wrong box.

do sky boxes have to be connected to the phoneline?

what im thinking now is to get a package that includes a skybox and minidish use that to get setanta, since these dish +reciever packages are going cheaper than the skyboxes themselves

then i can use my 80cm dish +dreambox (maby a motor when i get sick of my ladder) to do a bit of exploring!

Just a thought! might not happen but il think about it?

A sky digibox does not have to be connected to a phoneline if you install it yourself. If sky install it then you will need to connect to a phoneline. The sky engineer will refuse to fit it if there is no phoneline. All you need to get setanta is a sky digibox, sky minidish and an old viewing card. Then you call setanta give them the viewing card number and they will switch it on within the hour. I know this as I have setanta on a non contract digibox thats not connected to a phoneline.

so any old viewing card off ebay would do?
is it true that a FTA card would do?

and what FTA channels could i get with a viewing card that i could not get with a FTA ordinary reciever

would anyone recomend i call setanta for the card
I think they sometimes refuse to send it,Dont know why!

The answer i gave you was if you intended to get a Dreambox. You can buy any old receiver off ebay as the only thing you will ever use it for is to activate the viewing card and maybe update it occasionally dependent on what emu you use

Not true unfortunately for Sky. You can still have a new install form Sky without the need to have it connected to a phoneline
You just have to pay a charge with your first months payment, i think it was £30 when i last inquired.

And i'm not talking about the installation cost as that is on top

Channel 5 and Sky 3 last time i looked

is the Thomson a good box tho,(i read that in a good recption area like ireland that it would be a better option than a pace box)hope thats true

i might have to rely on the skybox for a few months before i get another receiver

if this will be a Linux box or a ordinary technomate il have to think about,

cardsharing is a nice idea, but will i ever cardshare that's what im trying to figure out!

----------------------------------------------------------

why do sky subscribers have to connect to the phone line,is it to stop cardsharing or whats the idea behind it?
