I am a newbie Currently I have three computers connected by wireless network. Now I plan to get rid off my subscribed modem and install a cloned modem and force 20mb connection. so can I use my same mac address? what else should I do? to be on safer side?

Erm, i wouldnt lol.
They could that someone is using a MAC that isnt meant to be used. Or the mac will be removed from the network anyways as soon as you leave VM.
Just do a scan directly connected to the modem before you leave VM and take a not and use those MAC's and force the configs. And also this would be a safer side to doing things.

Think u made an error m8..(but correct ME if im wrong tho!!)if anyone tries 2 use the same 2 MACs in the same UBR segment, they will keep booting each other off, so anyone who needs a new mac is best scanning at a m8s house thats got VM broadband who ideally lives around 2-3 miles away, but no more than about 6..and some TFTP Ip areas also dont support forced configs, like mine!! GRRRRR!!

Nuh M8 nowadays u can scan from ur place using DhCP sniffer and will get different UBR macs aswell as same UBR macs, so its a case of trying them all and see which works for u.

So scan from home if it reboots couple of times change it till u find stable mac, hope this helps

u need to use it sparingly only if u r bruteforcing it but if u just running without the bruteforce its safe. (i think i heard somewhere in this forum)

I hope some of the more experienced can shed a light on this.

Its cool guyz, calm down!! It wos only in sniff mode..im already on a cloned mac+in an address that aint been a customer 2 vermin 4 years..oh 2 shed sum light on the "safety" issues of usin a sniffer..DHCP offers from the local tftp server operate like a broadcast, similar 2 an Ethernet network does, which means EVERY MAC on the UBR segment listens 2 the offers, thats why layer 2 MAC addresses r used, so that when incomin data frames r sensed by the modem, they will only respond 2 any info that is meant 4 them, ie a frame with its OWN mac in the frame header, and will discard ALL other MAC's, so once the sniffer notices a frame bein received, it only records the info that the modem senses, it doesn't send any info back or modify the data in any way, it also leaves the frame intact, therefore the Layer 3 addressing, (IP addresses) aren't even bein touched, so it would be impossible 4 VM 2 pick up even a subbed MAC sensin 4 DHCP offers..
Source of info...Cisco CCNA (im certified!!)
