Its quite possible the MAX232 hardware you have is faulty.
I managed to do three modems with one, then it stop working.
Constant time outs. Turned out the max232 IC was busted.
Quick trip to RS and £1.60 later I swapped the chips and it worked.

Have you made sure u have selected the CORRECT com port that relates to your serial on your pc?
As mentioned above, its VERY easy to get ONE thing wrong and it just won't work!
