German pay-TV company Premiere could receive unexpected competition from a US heavyweight broadcaster at the upcoming tender for the TV rights of national soccer league Bundesliga. According to industry sources, Walt Disney's subsidiary ESPN is considering submitting a bid for the domestic German pay-TV rights.
In order to evaluate the chances of a possible collaboration with platform operators, ESPN is said to be in discussion with leading German cable companies. No further details are known yet. In Europe, ESPN currently operates sports channels ESPN Classic and NASN (which will be renamed ESPN America in February 2009). They can be received via cable, satellite and ADSL in Germany.
