Default Would you recommend a Starview?

Hi all

For the last couple of years have been using a modded PACE box, which has finally gievn up the ghost. Am looking at the STARVIEW 4 THE BOX SUPER USB PVR and it is my understanding that with this box wont have to worry about cutting talkback, programming cards etc, just install firmware onto usb then onto box.

Couple questions:

Where would I get the firmware (would the bigmaq toolbar have all i need?)

Is starview a reliable make of box?

How often do you get probs with channels dropping, keys changing etc?

Would you recommend I take the plunge and put an order in?

Cheers in advance

Default Re: Would you recommend a Starview?

right ill try and answer in the order posted

1. and cable box other than the offical ones do not have a talkback feature so the cc dont know you are using it

2. the FW is available from here (i think) the chatterbox toolbar and also the deja vu toolbar (easy download and install & always in ur browser bar)

3. IMO the starview box or the new ones at least are not yet stable BUT are a good choice for ease of use (there are a few known problems, but thats the same with every box available)

4. i have not used a starview for a while but i do know that when channels drop you have to manual scan to get them back sometimes it can happen anwhere from daily or once in say 2 weeks its just when the cc feel like it and the same with the keys although with the keys most boxes including the new SV auto update the keys when they are rolled

5. before you order i will give you something to consider.

the SV 4 only has 1 tuner so the pvr function is stuck to whatever you record u have to watch,
the FW is still beta so nothing is guarenteed with regards where the bugs are
SV 4 requires an aditional hard drive to use PVR function

plus side it has timeshift function so can pause tv etc

personally i like and have used for 2 years or so the kryptview box very very good in my opinion (but as with everything still has a few minor bugs)
the KV has the added benefit of a powerscan function whilst in standby so when channels drop it automatically re-finds them whilst in standby which in general for me anyway is over night whilst im in bed, the SV4 says it has this function but as of yet it isnt added in any FW release
also in the last few monthe the KV developers have been rolling out new firmware constanly to work with any bugs found but the starview developers have been renound for being very slow and implementing changes

just look at the box pvr twin tuner which had some slight problems with the recording function and some other issues they stopped supporting is and rolled out another box so they are a good few ppl having to shell out for a new box

i personally had the original starview & the box mk1 but switched to the KV and glad i did

but make a decision based on your needs as the KV can be slightly more difficult to setup initally but once done its easy to use One tip if u decide to go KV get a new one with the updated tuner as a few ppl had trouble withe the old tuner and new FW

HTH

any more help id be happy to try and help
