Hi Guys,
I have managed to help myself learn a few bits on the cable side and now would like to expand my knowledge in the Sat scene. I have read a few threads and some stickys but its still a bit gobbldy gook. Is there a guide where I can read of how I can get a receiver to go with my standard sky minidish to get all the channels via that. Or would I require a motorised dish. I was also thinking these technomate receivers, are they similar to the cable ones where you just flash them and connect it to the line and all is sometimes good to go. Or is it not that easy.. Please be patient with me as I'm someone who does'nt even know how to use his PC to the full extent yet managed to program a cable box just by reading up a few threads and a lot of help on the way. Thanks |

All you will get on your S*y dish is the FTA channels on Astra 2 28.2E, to get the most out of the satellite hobby you really need a motorized dish preferably capable of spanning 45 degrees East to 45 degrees West of South, or as much as possible.
Providing you can receive all the satellites between 28.2E and 30W, you will get access to most of the viewing possibilities. The first thing you need to do is work out where you would need to site your dish, preferably facing South, to give you full line of sight for all the available satellites. If you look at your S*y dish, which is currently pointing at 28.2 East, and stand behind it, facing towards the Astra 2 satellite, you just move 28.2 degrees to your right to find South. The bigger dish the better in this hobby and depending on your location it is recommended to go for a good quality 80cm - 1 metre dish, the bigger the dish the more signal quality you can get on weaker satellites. You are allowed up to a 1 Metre dish now without the need for planning permission, as well as your S*y dish. Check if there are any local variations on your councils web site. The hardest part is setting up the motorized dish, once this is done using the receiver is pretty straight forward. |

So how much do these dishes go for?
Is there a channel list of what is available and with a motorised dish do you have to scan the sky all the time to pick up your frequency or channels? Thats why you need it to be motorised etc Excuse the noob attitude. Thanks |

You need it to be motorised as there are multiple satellites in the sky and you want to be able to get as many as possible. There are several decent channels on each satellite. It won't be constantly moving... But say you are watching Premiere, the satellite will be pointing at 19.2e and will stay there until you decide you want to watch a different channel on a different satellite. Say you wanted to watch Nova Sport, the dish would then move to 1w and stay there until you moved to another satellite. Messing with satellite is a lot different to cable.
