Im not an expert but i did a bit of research, most plasma tvs have a self diagnostic function, the most common faults are the X and Y and main boards, which you can buy as a repair kit, they just plug and screw in, there are a few places if you google or look on E bay that supply, prices vary from about £60 to £200, or if its fairly new you may only be able to get from manufacturer which may be a bit more.
If you look on E bay or ads in papers etc and find one for spares or repair go for a decent make and check that you can get boards for that model before you buy. DONT BUY ONE WITH A BROKEN SCREEN, you cant economically replace them, you could of course buy one for the spare boards. I managed to buy a jvc 42 on e bay for £83 a 2006 model, the fault was it kept switching off and no volume, i went to collect and was suprised it looked brand new, tested it there with a dvd recorder the picture came on for 2mins then it clicked off, the picture looked ok though , so deal done, later on after removing the small control board i noticed the on button had broken off inside and was jammed on the button, also the headphone socket was bent up inside, all due to the sellers 6 year old daughter, he did mention about the button, i removed the headphone socket as i wouldnt use it, linked the points with solder, superglue and a bit of tape repaired the on button, switched on and couldnt believe it was all ok, i was expecting to have to replace the boards even then it would have been a bargain, i hope anyone who decides to have a go after reading this has as much luck as i did, you can download repair manuals for most models they are quite comprehensive with diagnostic faults etc. |

Ive got friends and family all wanting me to get them one now lol, there seems to be a good market for them as with labour cost and charges for collection and delivery, as they are heavy and awkward to transport and cant really be repaired on site, repair costs so much they will opt to buy a new tv.
You get a lot with broken screens often its game controllers that have been let go of, they are good for salvaging boards etc, a lot of them use the same boards samsung and phillips are common to a few makes, the ones that have been dropped or fallen off the wall the boards will have probably been damaged, it looks as though manufacturers will be bringing out cheaper replacement screen panels in the future so that would be good. I think i will have a look into the lcd type as well . |
