One option may be to boot it up using a Linux boot disk, then get the data off it that way. Ubuntu for example.

Have you tried the repair option instead of re-install when your loading the disc, if it lets you, you wont lose any files.

Ah you have learned the hard way about backing up important data......

In all my years of being a computer tech at the local school Ive NEVER met anyone who regularly backed their data up before they lost something important.

Yes i did it that way before, it will show up as drive E or something like that, then you can swap the files over to pc HD, you should have spare connection points inside pc and a temp place to mount it.

If its IDE type swap the little jumper from master to slave, or pc will try to boot up from it.

The problem with trying to do that with an IDE drive from a Laptop is that the connectors for IDE drives on Laptops and Desktops are different. An adapter is needed.

If it is SATA, then they are the same.

Yes, it is a very good idea to back up all your stuff, I must do that sometime.

Not, sure but if you can boot off a USB disk, then you could transfer all the data to that.

For Ubuntu, google it, it is downloadable for free.
