Default help buying a modem and gettin started.

hi can anyone advise me on where i can buy a modem and i will need help gettin it set up. there is a couple on flea bay but when i asked one of the sellers how i would set it up he said i would need a mac address but would not advise me on where i would get a mac address he said he might be able to get it but i did not want to buy it and find out he could not get me the info i would need to run the modem. so i could do with a modem set to my area or someone selling one who could advise me with the information i would need to get it started. i live in nottingham city centre. so any help would be greatly appreciated.

1stly do a search of what you are looking for and it will reveal a whole load of previous threads relating to that.
Have a good read and it will give you an idea of what it involves and how it works. Also search for the haynes online manual or the modem bible.
You can get it flashed as you say from flebay and all you would need is to add a working mac to get it running. But you would then need the same equipment to add the mac, so I think you would be better of getting all the necessary equipment and doing it yourself.

Search for things like Ambit 250, Mac addresses, etc and read the whole threads and then come back and ask if you dont understand what something means.

Pengy do you have an original VM modem?
If you do then all you need to do is buy a modem from fleabay and scan for MAC's using DHCP Sniffer. This will allow you to obtain macs from other areas and use them on your modem.
Once you have these you can enter them into your modem and input a Config address which will allow you to reach top speed.

yes i got access to an v modem about 3 mins from the address i want to put it so i will try looking for the dhcp sniffer and try getting a mac from that and then i wont mind risking buying one off fleabay cause the person selling them said if i got mac address it should work. thankyou for the info as im totaly new to what to do with the modems im hoping to pick it up.
