ok i just bought a 73 inch HD tv and was excited to upgrade to HD.
i called and they came out today to set me up...guess what - no line of sight. i was ****ed! i called and asked if i could get the eastern arc set up but they said that they will send someone (more important i guess) to see if i can get anything...i think they are just blowing me off? the tech guy who came said that he could prob get it if i was in my neighbors yard ( about 10 ft. into there yard)...he was looking through some kind device to determin this. so my question is.... he was approx 6 ft. tall so if i move the pole to my yard and make it 15 ft. or so to raise it up would that make a difference to clear the trees..as he was only viewing from his height of 6 ft or so. will making it higher work. he also said it was at a 20 degree angle so not very high. heres a pic of the area he said may work in my neighbors yard. this is about 200+ ft. away from my house.

Hi,
I don't know which satellite you are after or in what location. Presumably the USA somewhere. But in general, if there is an obstruction, such as a tree or a building , you either position the dish so that it can 'see' over it, or see 'around' it. To see over it means either moving further away from it, or positioning the dish higher. If you elevation angle is 20 degrees, which is relatively low on the arc, the dish must be positioned so that the angle to the top of the obstruction is less than this. To see around it, you obviously need a big enough garden to accomodate the position. I have installed a dish by someones front wall before, as that was the only position to get round an absolutely massive willow tree, twice the height of the house roof. To find out which way to point the dish, go to dishpointer.com EDIT, while typing the picture appeared. Which way has the dish got to point, towards the shorter trees or the higher ones? The shorter ones look at a pretty low angle to me. But difficult to tell from a photo.

No chance looking south I think, the trees are far too high.
Find out which way the dish has to point, and use an angle finder. That will confrim one way or the other.

You'll have to provide more details, like which satellite? Its name and orbital position, relative to Greenwich.

The Dish Network appears to transmit from a series of satellites mainly from your location and further westwards, according to Lyngsat.com. The closest one being at 77W, being almost directly at your due south, with an elevation of 42 degrees.
The only likely contender is approx 15 degrees east of your due south at 61.5W, Packages - North & South America - LyngSat I think that local knowledge is required on this, from a US based satellite forum,, such as satelliteguys.
