Don't trust the speedtesters, I've never had a rating faster than 5Mbit on cable, although my 8Mbit ADSL regularly gets 10Mbit down and 1.5Mbit up test results.

Test it with a Usenet download or from a fast FTP download - or even Microsoft, but do it overnight when it's quiet.

I agree totally with Lincsat regarding speed testers.
I get about 9Mb on a speed test, yet last night on a direct download of a 700mb video I was exceeding 21mb!

Wow Fiber optic would be awesome, but I don't see that happening any time soon
