Hi All,
My first post on modem section. I just had my broadband updated from 2mb cable broadband to the new10mb fibre optic broadband last week or so i thought it was. I thought i would have new fibre optic cable installed in the house only to be told by the engineer that everyone all ready has fibre optic and the copper cable from the old installation remains in the house. The fibre optic cable already goes to the green box at the end of the street and its copper cable the rest of the way. How can they call this the mother of all broadband with the latest fibre optic cable when they still use the old cable to the modem? I've done various speed tests and had speeds as low as 1.7mb upto 9.2 averaging out to about 5mb. I rung V/M several times to complain they said it must be the modem which is old motorola surfboard one, its about 10 years old. They sent new one today but i'm still getting speeds of less than 4mb, has anyone got any ideas what i can do pls? I've been told i can do what i want with the old modem which is Motorola Surfboard, model number SB41001-BG. Can this model be modded in anyway pls? Thanks in advance for any help. |

Yeah Speedtests arnt that reliable.
Download yourself something from Microsoft and see what speeds your getting from their. Also yeah, the fibre optic broadband like the engineer said, is delivered to the Virgin Cab from their end and then distributed by a coaxial cable feed to the houses. Its still fast though ![]() With your new modem you might need it to break in the first few steps for the speed. I no this can be the case with ADSL. Just leave it a few weeks for this two. |

I'm sorry to hear your broadband experience didn't go the way you had expected.
I think you had very high expectations of what you were getting; Really this is VMs fault because of its advertising and lack of education. Quote:

Even the engineer who come to fit it said VM advertising campaign was misleading and they should be taken to trading standards for false information. Many Thanks for all the replies everyone, i'm in the middle of reading up on modding my old modem now lol. |

The SB4100 is rated to around 36Mb, it handles the 20Mb very well

Really?? Ha Ha....good work Lincsat....I know someone with this this modem and they've been running on 10 for the past year or so thinking the reason none of their 20meg addresses worked was due to that model's speed restriction.
Can't wait to see their face when I tell 'em they were just using bad macs! |
