Unhappy Can't get on the net with IE

Hi all.
Don't be in this section very much, so please forgive my cheek in asking this question.

I am on Vista Home Premier and have only got dial up. I also have 3 Mobile USB Modem.

I cannot sign in to my Windows Live Messenger or Yahoo Messenger, nor can I get IE to work. The forgoing only applies to my dial up, when I am using the USB Modem I can sign in to both messengers and use IE.

I can use Minfield, Opera and the older versions of Firefox with my dial up.

This problem has been with me for around a week now and it is doing my head in, mostly because I can't use the USB Modem in the house, no reception here. I have looked up the error number I get from Live Messenger and tried what they suggest, but nothing I do makes any difference. The error number I get is 80048820.

IE just refuses to connect to the net.

Thanks for any suggestion or help I will receive.

Very best regards Wez

Hi Wez. Googled your error. Seems to be a common problem. Some suggestions that may help.

Check your System Date and Time

Open your system clock by double-clicking the clock on your system toolbar and make certain that the date and time are correct.
Check your Proxy Settings

Invalid proxy settings can sometimes cause the 80048820 error. The difficulty is often determining what the correct proxy settings for your next are. For most networks, the correct setting is to not use a proxy server at all.
  • Open Internet Explorer, Open the <Tools> menu, Select the <Internet Options> menu item, Open the <Connections> tab
    • If you connect to the Internet using a Dial-up or VPN connectio, click the approriate connection and then click the <Settings> button
    • If you connect to the Internet using a broadband connection, click the <LAN Settings> button
In the window that opens, configure the correct settings for your proxy:
    • If you do not use a proxy server, uncheck "Use a proxy server..." If you use a manually configured proxy server, check "Use a proxy server..." and make certain that the Address and Port information are correct, If you use an automatically detected proxy server, check "Automatically detect settings"
    • If you use an automatically configured proxy server, check "Use automatic configuration script" and enter the address of the script
    Click the <OK> button
  • Click the <OK> button
Ensure that SOFTPUB.DLL is Registered

The steps to register SOFTPUB.BLL are:
  • Click the <Start> button, Click the <Run> button, Type regsvr32 softpub.dll ,Click the <OK> button
  • Restart MSN Messenger
Download the Latest MSN Messenger

Microsoft has released several patches to help reduce the number of 80048820 errors.
Visit Microsoft to download the latest version of MSN Messenger
Reinstall Norton Internet Security

Some users have reported that this error can be caused by Norton Internet Security
For those users, removing and reinstalling Norton Internet Securityrepaired the issue.
Reinstall Internet Explorer

Some users have reported that this error can be caused by Internet Explorer.
For those users, removing and reinstalling Internet Explorer repaired the issue.
Check the MTU Settings on your Router

The last recommended fix is to change the MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) size on your router to 1,400 bytes.
Note that changing the MTU on your network can reduce performance for you entire Internet connection. If you are at this point, you might be better off switching to another MSN Messenger compatible instant messaging client, such as Pidgin, Miranda, Psi, Admium, or Trillian.

Default Re: Can't get on the net with IE

Hi mate,
Thanks a million for that, I use Onspeed and it is a real pain, keeps cutting in and out so I dissable it when it does and my proxy settings were set to it's address and port. I will never call a Dub a Jacken again lol.

Thanks again, I did dissable the proxy in Opera, but it don't seem to make any difference with Minefield.

I will not be renewing my Onspeed, to tell the truth I get faster download speeds without it anyway and they are not very friendly when it comes to customer support, just tell you to stop it and restart it, not much good that advice.

Good luck and very best regards Wez
