how to receive the basic channels?

Hi guys, as you can see i am new to this all and i would appreciate your expertise, I was with Virgin for a year (Tel-Broandband- Tv) but their broandband was the worst I've ever had!! I have moved to O2 now but I' ve lost the TV. for some reason the telephone line is connected and i have checked with them they dont have me in their records. I just want to watch the basic channels i.e not chipped etc and as I live in a conservation area in london I cant have a satelite dish or an aerial put up! Can I jut buy a box-card , connect it and still receive the freview channel? I dont think its illegal cause they are free anyway( or am i wrong?)

Just plug the box into the cable mate and you'll recieve freeview , and BTW you wont need a satalite dish for a chipped box just the cable you have in your house/flat already.

Thanks for the reply, so is a matter of buying abox of e-bay/gumtree for nearly 30 quid plug it on and thats it ! at least for the basic 40 channels,
any idea about brandetc does it need to have a card for the basic channels or not?
ps where i live cant have satelite-aerial cause of the planning restrictions and the only way to have tv is with an indoor aerial which in my case does not work or get virging cable for around 12 quid a month for only the 40 odd channels !!

if you had virgin then the tv point on the wall will already be in your house/flat, just connect this to a box and then you will have your freeview or FTA as we call it, cable/ntl/virgin etc has NEVER had satellite dishes these are for sky only so you dont have to worry about being conservationist (i nearly put conversationalist lol), as you can see its as easy as abc

Check you still have a live feed before you buy a box, connect cable to a tv set and tune it in, you should be able to get a few analogue channels, if so you should have a digital signal also.
Unless you are in an area that has already stopped analogue transmission.

You will still get the free channels without a card, but you will keep getting a your card is not inserted box up everytime you change channels, a bit annoying you just press ok to clear.

many thanks red diesel!, iIt works as you said for the bbc1,bb2,itv,channel 4 which is fine for me! I might not even bother to buy a box really

Hi again, I bought an old pace box (2003) for 20 quid with no card and i have connected that to the cable box, the virgin logo comes up with message Powering up.... just a moment and then nothing happens, any ideas ?

What area are you TW, ex CW or pure ? What model no underneath box starts D ? think net id needs setting.
