i have a 2meg connection due to low funds, used to have the 20meg and really miss it. where do i start to get this modem back upto 20meg (besides phoning \/irgin?) i have read a little on it but i need it simplified if you can. thanks in advanced. also if i get my friend a modem and modify it will it work on his line? he has no subs but his line is active as he has a starview and gets all the channels. thanks, racy

ok, i see no one knows? can you atleast tell me whether i need anything more than the ethernet connected to the pc? if i need to connect to the serial too then i will just leave it as the lappy doesnt have one. come on sea mouse you must know. tia

your best bet is to buy an ambit 250 or 255 as these have highest success rate i have found. you will need the ambit config tool, max 232 cable, DHCP sniffer for a 20mb mac. first off connect your modem using the max232 cable and flash with a firmware (infinite is most commonly used) then use the ambit config tool to program your modem with your mac. Hope this helps

First of all, its better not to hack the modem that virgin gave you. You can find another one on ebay for around £12.

To flash the modem, you will need a max232 or max233 cable which connects to the serial port on your pc. If you don't have a serial port, you can get a usb to serial adaptor.

There are various guides available for flashing different modems with different firmware, but I suggest you flash with haxorware as its the easiest.

You will also need to find a mac address to clone using dhcp sniffer.

i have the ambit 255 (black one not blue). i have everything apart from the232 lead, where can i get one of these from. also, gonna have to get a new modem, would it be better to buy a 250 or is the 255 just as easy. thanks for your replys people.

You can get the max232 cables on ebay. Just search for max232.

Also the 255 is exactly the same hardware as the 250, the only difference is that the 250 has a usb port.
