Default Jumping in at the deep end

Ok,
so I'm here to ask if I can pick your brains.

Im planning on doing the 'mod'ed cable box thing after success with the eurovox range.

So here goes,
if i buy an nthell pace or samsung Cable box with paired card, which I think is the Davic (if I need to know that or not i dont know :P) ,
I would need a 'phoenix' programmer? Would this work?
I've heard something about an unlooper - would this be nescessary?
What else would be nescessary?

or
if i buy an nthell samsung Cable box with paired card,
I would need a Fun card of some type?
I would need to get a JTAG to identify the IRK and BK codes for the card??
What else would I need?

Sorry to be so abrupt its just the guides (even the really long one) seemed to expect the person reading it to understand exactly what he was on about...

I'm looking forward to getting into this as when I get the hang of something I usually eventually become an expert.

Thanks in advance,
Ryan

What area are you pure ntl etc ? Most pace boxes can be j tagged or led simmed also samsung 2100 j tag, so not a problem without paired card, just use a funcard.
Samsung 2110 and sa 8300 v+ you need a paired card, so you would need an unlooper as well as a programmer.
If you do a search you will find which boxes work in your area, although most will on the latest platform some may be tricky, dont buy a pace 2000.
To put it simply to read a standard nagra card you need to unlock it with an unlooper and then read/ write it with a programmer.
If you use j tag or led sim to obtain details you can just write a funcard.
If your in TW or ex CW area you need to set net id you can use a funcard for that.

That programmer doesnt do fun or atmega, i would recommend a dynamite plus or infinity phoenix, definately worth the extra tenner.
Best box for you would be pace 4010, 4001, sammy 2100, 2110 only with a paired card.
Fun 4 you can use a 2 with bin files.

Hate to seem cheap but how would this be: PHOENIX SMARTMOUSE PROGRAMMER WITH USB AND RS 232 PORT on eBay, also, Memory Card Readers, Input Devices, Computing (end time 23-Dec-08 13:50:08 GMT)

Also : does DAVIC or DOCSIS matter (the haynes guide seemed to be pre-virgin) and therefore does it matter what cable company it used to be in?

Also again: If I find me a Samsung 2110c, do I need a paired card or can I get what I need with a Jtag?

Thanks

Only way of doin the 2110 is from a paired card m8, then you'll also need an unlooper aswell as your programmer which can be a little expensive if you just intend on doin one box!!

the best box for you would probably be a 2100 as these can be jtagged
you can pick up a jtag from TMC for a tenner if you dont mind a bit of soldering

go for progs reddiesel recommended or an unlimited instead but these can be a bit of a pain in the arse over VCP

Well, I think i might just have my hands on a SMT 2110c and it wont be the first so I may aswell splash out on the equipment. Hows the 'samsung 2100c tut' in the downloads section? Is it any good - its not the best tutorial i suppose. Anyone have any opinions or is it a good one?

2100 is a different box to 2110, that phoenix again doesnt do fun or atmega,
Read the cable for dummies or pace cable guide, there are tuts for 2110 , all in downloads.

I know that they are different boxes - that was actually a typo.
I am planning on going down the route of the 2100 route for the obvious fact that you dont need a paired card. I might eventually have a fiddle with the 2110c but Ill get some experience first. Am gonna get me an Infinity USB Phoenix Programmer from lincsat for £37, a couple of FUN card 4's from lincsat for £5 a pop, and I might actually splash out on a POGO Jtag if I dont choose the TMC one for a £10.
Im not too good as a solderer (eek dell laptop power sockets )

Ive found some good tuts in the download section aswell as on another forum [wizardmods] and am gonna follow them to my ability when I get my hands on my first box (soon!).

Any problems that you can forsee, please post before I go and blow my cash =P

Thanks
