formatted cam, then loaded underworld 148 - it loaded fine it said. put cam in turned on tm5400 - asks me to insert smartcard i dont have one and never have for my diablo - still scrambled channel on all canal+ package
any ideas y???

You have to adjust the cofiguration settings.
Go into the cams menu, enter Underworld 148 and turn both Emulators and N2 AU to ON.
The message you are seeing is probably the Keys are Expired, please insert smartcard message, which is normal, you will see this on Digi TV, Nagra 2, channels as you're cam will be Auto Updating the keys, this could take up to 10 minutes, once they have been updated everything will work as normal.

I have got a slight problem though - Mine works fine but my friends got a Technomate receiver and when i put the cam in, the picture comes up ok - but theres a big square in the middle saying "NO ACCESS" - whats all that about ???

That doesn't sound like a Diablo Cam message but to make sure switch the Smart card message to Show Never in the configuration folder.
Is your friends Technomate patched, if so try turning the patch off.
