Acer extensa 5520 internet problem

Hi all,
I have an Acer extensia 5520 which is about 6 months old which has never been connected to the internet. I thought it was about time that I should update it through windows update but when I took the ethernet cable out my house PC and plugged it into the laptop and start up internet explorer I get the not connected/ cant find website page coming up. The laptop is seeing the connection to the modem as the local area connection icon in My Network Places has a red cross through it when I disconnect it and returns to normal when i reconnect it. I am currently running XP on it.

Is there setting I should change on the laptop ?

Its ok. Ive got it. Had to set it to obtain ip address automatically
