Default What is involved in a key roll...??

now most people who come on here when they keys change, just want a fix and then they are gone again. its obviouse that this will happen, as lets be honnest, when this site isn't too busy, that means the site is doing its job, i on the other hand get very intrigued during situations like this, i am not a massive poster on here, but i sit on here reading other peoples posts and troubles most days (office job for u) learning so many things.

how do the keys work? and what is a key? we all know it just to be what gives us ''telly'' but i doubt many of us actually know what is behind it.

is key rolling something mirgin vedia do often? as i i recall it happening a few times over a space of days at one point, and if so, what has been diffenerent this time that the cards cant update?

and its been said a few times since yesterday, but the people behind places like this really dont get the credit they deserve, especially when dicks come on wanting a ''chipped box'' and they dont even know what win rar is... i'm sure i echo the thoughts of many others out there when i say thanks a lot team...

a good post m8, and yes i cant stand leeches, they offer nothing to the ppl here or other forums, keys change anything from 1 hour to days or weeks, usally cards can take this but now and again they change the keyroll, when this happens most cards will go down, the moscs can handle most stuff, you need a more tect person to really explain

funnily enough, just before all of this happened, i was in the process of finding out more about mosc's, as i was wondering why people still bother with them seeing as things like smart cards are much easier to do... and now we can see why... my dad has had his mosc for 4 years and its never once gone down...

I will try to give you some idea of what is involved, I don’t consider myself an expert and I am prone to the odd mistake, I think it’s my age!!

Keys - The video signal as transmitted is encrypted using a set of keys the box needs the same set of keys to be able to decrypt the video and provide you with watchable TV. As the hack has developed an escalation in measures and counter measures have resulted in the keys being rolled or changed frequently by the cc to try to prevent you watching their TV. In the early days the keys probably hardly ever changed and if they did they could have just transmitted new keys to their cards. Ok that’s enough about keys.>>
>>
AU - The ccs transmit the keys embedded in an EMM, I think it stands for entitlement management message. This is a global message intended for all cards on the system the first thing to be aware of is the message is again encrypted so in its raw state is not much use. When the emm arrives at the card the card decrypts it and we end up with a portion of it in the emm buffer which starts at address location 0080 on the card. The genuine rom cards will always process the keyroll correctly that’s the first point. The non genuine cards fun, opus etc and alternative boxes all use a form of emulation software, if this software were perfect and could perform all the functions that a genuine card does then it would also process the keyroll correctly. So the cc will try to identify a difference that they can exploit and write a keyroll emm that will be processed ok on the genuine cards but not the emulation software then you get me fun cards gone down!!

Sorry if it’s a bit longwinded if anyone has a current decrypted keyroll log and can paste it up I am sure we can go through it.

Not too sure who does the coding for VM they may have there own coders or they may pay kudelski to do it for them. Either way there must be a cost to it to keep identifying a difference in the emulation that they can exploit without affecting the genuine cards which would cost them in customer complaints.

Interestingly one of the major satellite providers, before it moved over to a more secure version of its encryption (nagravision) did change its keys 3 or 4 times every day for a number of weeks, so the cost of doing so, can not be too prohibitive.
