Default Custom Made Computer

Has anyone here every bought computer parts and put them together to make a computer? Can you do that? I don't think the computer would be very nice if you made it yourself because things can go wrong.

Yes, actually I do this all the time.
Its actually very inexpensive, and you can build a very nice system.
Most prebuilt systems have mark up, like dell to name one company, but if you buy all your parts from sites like tigerdirect.com you can build a system better than any dell for about 1/2 to 3/4 the cost.
I actaully just yesterday put together two work stations for two new employees at my office, here is what I put together:
2 - Powmax Black ATX Case w/USB & 450w Power Supply -- $29.99 (2)
2 - WD Caviar 80GB SATA HD 7200/2MB/SATA-150 -- $37.97 (2)
2 - Biostar P4M800M7A Socket 775 Motherboard -- $54.99 (2)
2 - Intel Celeron 345 3.06Ghz 533FSB Socket 775 -- $69.97 (2)
2 - Liteon 52X Black Internal CDRW Drive -- $23.99 (2)
2 - Aopen Optical Mouse PS2/USB Black & Silver -- $9.99 (2)
2 - Aopen 107 keys Windows 98 Keyboard Black PS2 -- $8.99 (2)
2 - Intel Original Socket 775 Prescott Cooling Fan -- $29.99 (2)
2 - Ultra 1024MB PC3200 DDR 400MHz -- $89.99 (2)
1 - D-Link Broadband DSL W/4 Port Switch & Print Port -- $56.99
1 - Lexmark X2330 All-in-One Printer -- $49.99
2 - Acer Wide 19" 500:1 1440 x 900 LCD Monitor -- $218.99 (2)

And its very simple to put a full system together. If you don't know what your doing, or how the inside of a pc works, they will send you little booklets to help you out. I put these two work stations together in under an hour, but then of course there is the OS install and all that good stuff wich will take you a couple more hours, figure about 1-2 per machine depending on all what you want to install.

well sort of custom made because i go to computer store and pick one part and another and tell the computer technicians there to whip me up a system of my own choosing so i can say with my computer package right now majority of it are hand picked by me but installed by someone.

Can you scrap an old computer and add the parts into your new one?

sure can.
a couple of months ago, my brother had his harddrive fail.
So i went over, turns out, not only his harddrive but his cpu was burnt and he only had 128mb of mem.

so i swapped out his cpu for new, mirror his drive onto a new one, and upgraded his mem, all is well now.

I built my first computer from scratch a few years ago, and guess what, I'm writing this message from it right now!
I like building a computer from scratch because it doesn't void the warranty if you open it up.
Now, if you buy it from Dell or IBM you have to get some certified tech to install new components for you for som ridiculous price.
