Default The Box Super won't flash

I have read lots of posts but still not found an answer to my very frustrating problem. I am attempting to flash my Mother-in-Law's Starview 3. I have a cable which I have used to flash Dboxes and Freeview PVRs connecting my XP laptop to box. I am using GTRom_Super_8.02e.exe (612kb).

Device manager shows: DKU-5 connectivity adapter cable (com1)
Eltima virtual serial port (Com1->Com2)
Eltima virtual serial port (Com2->Com1) (not sure what these 2 lines mean).

I double click the arrow,use Com 1 (tried others too), hit download, switch on box......then it says "downloading " but stays at 0% then "flash update failed".
God knows this is NOT a difficult thing to do - so why can't I do it???

PS Have tried switching box on 1st before hitting "download" but the result is the same.

Thanks for the suggestion Mark, I had not tried this before, but sadly it made no difference.

Can't tell you why it won't work but i had the same problem with my XP laptop.

For some reason the laptop won't communicate with the box.

I ended up using my ancient PC running windows 98 and that worked fine with the same cable.

Thanks for your replies and PMs. I gave up with the laptop and used my Vista PC instead. I had to install the driver for the USB-UART cable, this went to COM 2.
When I used COM 1 I got the same result as on the laptop, COM 2 wouldn't open the port at all. In device manager I scanned for hardware changes - and Eureka it worked - using COM 2 (DKU-5)
Another 2 minute job which took 9 hours.
