just received this.....worth a read
![]() --- In November we let you know how we're kicking fraud to the gutter and tackling the use of unauthorised set-top boxes, now take a look inside the day of our biggest operation to date... Location: East London and Essex. Operation 'Koblenz' Brief: Following a seven month investigation, a company called 'Rayyonics' has been identified as a major distributor of unauthorised set-top boxes, thought to be distributing thousands of boxes to consumers every week. Today's operation will consist of synchronised raids targeting five residences and the Rayyonics business unit. Team status: Ready for action! (and slightly cold and hungry). 05:00 - The team get in gear and head to the police station for the final pre- operation brief. They'll be split into five teams, made up of Police Officers and the Virgin team ready to make the early morning raids. <<...OLE_Obj...>> 06:00 - Teams assembled, they head to the five addresses, collated by our Investigations and Intelligence team through research and analysis with warrants issued by local magistrates courts. 06:30 -'GO, GO, GO.' the teams storm their allocated premises. The six suspects are read their rights and arrested for, 'Conspiracy to defraud Virgin Media' and are taken into custody (or 'the bin' in police lingo). <<...OLE_Obj...>> 07:30 - A full search of the main player's house reveals over £90,000 in cash and a huge amount of other evidence relating the offences that are under investigation. For now, the money is collected, counted, photographed and seized along with all the other evidence recovered. 08:30 - The 'key holder' to the business premises is cuffed and taken in Police transport to the Rayyonics business unit to open up the premises where around 2600 unauthorised set-top boxes are discovered. <<...OLE_Obj...>> 09:00 - Cops on Camera - the Police 'Scenes of Crime' unit arrives and films the property's contents ahead of the full search of the warehouse. Reports come in that valuable evidence has been seized at the other addresses raided and is being taken back to the Police station. <<...OLE_Obj...>> 10:30 - Two more suspects are escorted to the premises to identify property. The Virgin Media team commence a detailed search of the building and start to seize and preserve evidence. As the morning progresses it comes to light that there is a further warehouse containing even more boxes. 12:00 - The Police financial investigators arrive on the scene to commence a detailed examination of all potential financial evidence. There is also evidence of an array of luxury goods, bought by the company Director over the last few months. The police will go to court later this week with the intention to freeze a selection of the assets identified. (12:15 - Quick re-fuel and bacon buttie stop) <<...OLE_Obj...>> 12:30 - The Virgin Media cavalry arrives to start taking away the seized set top boxes, they're loaded into vans and taken away where they'll be securely stored as evidence. 14:00 - Some of the team head over to the second warehouse where a further1,900 boxes are found and seized by our guys. 15:00 - Rendezvous at the police station to interview the suspects. Each person will be questioned by the Virgin Media team and the Police, long into the night... <<...OLE_Obj...>> 22:30 - Interviews done, the suspects are bailed pending further enquiries into the offences they've been arrested for. It's back for a good nights sleep before they head back to the nic tomorrow for a de-brief with the police officers. So how did we get here? It's taken seven months of in depth investigation to get the team ready for full roll out of operation Koblenz, with the entire team having a part to play in the development of this case. It's been a great step for Virgin Media. On the day, Inspector Steve Edwards said, "We're very pleased with the way the operation has gone so far. We've achieved our objectives, the subjects have been identified, the evidence has been obtained and the process is going well. It'll now be a question of looking at what we've got, assessing from there and concluding with a successful prosecution." The Investigations & Intelligence Team, echoed the Inspector's comments, saying, "Now that the principle subjects have been arrested, we'll continue to collate evidence to compile a case against them. The forensic investigation could take months, so the hard work has only just begun!" It's also hoped that the knock on effect from this operation will help identify more suspects in the supply chain and lead us to the main source of production abroad. The suspects have now been released on Police bail and are due to answer bail at the Police station in March where there'll be more interviews, so we'll let you know how we get on next year... If you want to find out more about the Group Security team and what they get up to, And if you know of any fraudulent activity, you can get in touch with us via Speak Out. It's confidential and safe and we'll always take what you say seriously. You can even get in touch with us anonymously if you want |

LOl _I'm sure it is not illegal to sell them as it's just a bit of kit that depends on end-user if ever connected to anything. I'm sure it is breach of contract for end user not to delete the channels they ain't paid for, but would require a warrant and police to break the door down while you just sit watching unpaid for to prove it.
Boxes do not send out active signals, they just interpret the cable feed that VM are thowing down every line and listen for you. |
