Default Virgin 10mb/s: Nowhere near 10mb/s

Hello,

Recently upgraded my broadband from 2mb up to 10mb. To be quite blunt, im seeing very little difference. I have been checking my speed on a regular basis via speedtest.net (I know not the most accurate way to test but i've always found it good to give a general idea of broadband speed) and have rarely seen it go past 6000kbps and never past 6200kbps. I only use the internet really at night time so it can't be due to peak times and it can't be due to their capping as i've only went over their limit once and that was about four days ago.

To top things off; now im seeing a download speed of 1000kbs.

Is there anything anyone can recommed to get the most out of my upgrade? The Ethernet port on the modem does not appear to be working so its connected via USB and have been told this will not affect internet speed. Still is it worth updating the modem drivers?

My modem by the way is the Motorola SB4200 and I live in Edinburgh.

I personally would disagree and recommend a direct ethernet connection for a "simpler" route. Have you tried (as they always say..) downloading multiple files at once to test your throughput? Maybe try a few large files at a time from BY gaming, a couple of demos perhaps? http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/blueyondergames

The USB connection will not be helping - use the ethernet connection. Also check that there isn't anything running in the background on the machine that could be hogging bandwidth. Which operating system are you running?

Well they do mention it is "Up to" 10meg or whatever. But yeah change to ethernet.
Also Firewall could be blocking speed.
