Hi i have a new network hard drive and have plunged in my WD usb external drive but when i try and copy something from the Wd drive to the network drive while it is connected to the network drive it runs very very slow. Is this a common fault and can i do something to rectify this or is it the way it is going to be. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Andy

Probably lack of ram memory in your computer
Go to www.crucial.com/uk and run the online scanner. I had a laptop with 512mb ram which refused pointblank to copy our digital pics to an external hdd - it crashed every time.

Hi thanks for the reply. I dont think it is down to the memory as my laptop has 3 gig and my pc has 2 gig. The WD drive runs fine when it is connected to the pc or the laptop and transfers things fine. But it is when i connect it to the network drive and try to transfer thing from it it is very very slow. It can take over an hour to copy an album from the WD drive when it is plugged into the network drive but minutes when it is on the pc. So i just leave it connected to the pc but would like to have it on the network drive if i can get the speed sorted. Cheers Andy

Ah I think I see what you are doing. Lets see if Im right:
The external drive is connected to computer 1. You sit on computer 2 connected via a router with the external drive mapped as a network drive so you can copy stuff on and off it. Close yet?

Sorry i am not very good at explaining my self. I have 2 hard drives One is a usb Western digital 500gb and the other is a freecom network pro drive. The network drive can take a usb drive on it for extra storage. But when i plug the usb drive into the network drive it is very slow when i try and transfer something from it. But the usb drive works fine when it is connected to the PC. It is only a problem when i plug one into the other. Cheers Andy
