Default RS232 help needed

Hi all, after the recent VM problem i follew links to flash the box (complete novice) i brought a Rs232 female to female lead only to find out my lap top has a male port so i could'nt do this myself my cousin got his old laptop and did it for me however my question is can i buy a male to female lead instead, will this work and does it do the same job or how do i get around this problem? Many many thanks in advance.

you will need a usb to seriel converter cable and a null modem cable,not a rs232 which looks the same

RS232 on laptop should be male so female cable should fit! Also RS232 on KV is male so where is the prob?
Im confused or drunk here!

Oh yeah sorry meant to say female to female lead and laptop has female port so lead has no way to connect - told ya i was a novice!
