Default Ethernet problem but usb ok?

I CAN GET MY MODEM WORKING FINE THROUGH USB BUT CANT CONNECT WITH ETHERNET CABLE, WHEN I GO ON DIAGNOSE PROBLEM IT SAYS

THE NETWORK ADAPTER "local area connection" DOES NOT HAVE A VALID IP CONFIG.

MY OPTIONS ARE:

1. CHANGE THE SETTINGS FOR THE NETWORK ADAPTER "local area connection"

2. A PROBLEM WITH YOUR NETWORK ROUTER OR B/BAND MODEM MIGHT BE PREVENTING AN INTERNET CONNECTION

3. RESET THE NETWORK ADAPTER "local area connection"

I DONT THINK ITS EITHER 2 OR 3, I HAD IT WORKING THROUGH THE ETHERNET THE OTHER DAY AND I HAVNT CHANGED ANYTHING, NOT BOTHERED IF I GET IT WORKIN OR NOT BUT I READ THAT THE CONNECTION IS BETTER THROUGH THAT CONNECTION THAN USB, BUT IT MIGHT HELP ME IN FUTURE IF I KNOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH IT, AS ALWAYS ANY HELP WOULD BE GRATEFULL.

CAPS LOCK!

also, this seems to happen occasionally... either ethernet controller is broken, or ethernet port is knackered most likey.

I had the same prob with an Sb5101e, wos totally stumped as 2 the reason why cos there were no driver issues, only thing that cured it wos a swop of the Ethernet Mac with the USB mac in the internal webpage config..thank god haxorware lets u change all 3 MAC settings on the SBx modems..
