Default silly problem

Hello,

I have an mp3 player and it used to be that when I'd plug it in to my computer a window would pop up asking me what I wished to do, showing a list of options. At the bottom of that window was a check box saying "always perform the selected task" or something to that effect.

Well, I accidentally ticked that box and clicked OK with the wrong item selected, and now it automatically launches that application as soon as I plug it in. It's quite annoying because this particular application is very difficult to abort, I have to wait some time for it to settle down and finally close.

Can anyone please tell me how to go back now and change the accidental choice I made? And I have already been advised to right click on the icon of the player in my computer and change it there, but the option does not exist there.

Thanks for any help, and happy holidays!
Kenny

Are all you MP3 files now launching this program?

If so then go into Windows Explorer, select Tools then Folder Options. Select File Types and find the MP3 file extension (highlight first on list and press M to jump down the list). Highlight the MP3 file extension and select Change, now you will see the option to untick the 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file'.

Untick the box and you should be sorted.

No, it's not the mp3's, it's the player itself. You know the options window that opens when you connect it, asking you what you want to do? It's not the same as changing the default program that opens a particular file type. "Always perform the selected task" and "always use the selected program to open this type of file" are two different things, right?

Yes sorry wrong instruction

Connect your MP3 player
Go to Windows Explorer and you should see the MP3 player listed as a 'Removeable Drive' eg. Drive J:
Right click on the drive and select Properties
Go to the AutoPlay tab and select 'Prompt me each time to choose an action'

Hmmm, we're not getting anywhere here. I have already been advised to try this, as I said in my opening post. The only items in the menu when I right click on the player are: "expand, explore, open and format".

When I disconnect the player then it's not listed in Windows Explorer or My Computer.

I don't have any other "removeable drives" but I tried doing what you suggest on my dvd drive but the option 'Prompt me each time to choose an action' was already selected. I deselected it and reselected it and re-applied but no luck. Still the same problem. It just keeps initiating the same application whenever I plug in the player.
