Exclamation Is This For Real?? VM able to catch people?

Hi Peeps,

ive got a mate who works for VM, i was quizing him about the eurovox boxes & what VM was doing about it, he said that apparently VM have a way now of detecting who has a nonstandard box, which begged the question of how? he said somthing about them sending a bit of info down the line and the nonstandard box would reply to it, he said they had managed to rip the firmware apart and look into its code to get this trick working?

now i dunno if he's chatting fart or wat but can any of you guys tell me what you think? from my understanding the boxes only listen and dont talk back right???

It can be done its called time domain reflectometry, an old science not unlike radar, but advances in its development technology used in conjunction with specialized analytical computer software make this possible. Cant see it happening though an expensive and time consuming exercise that can be hidden from easily. Also the same as TV license evasion they would still need absolute proof.

Leftfield question on OP's thread (sorry for piggyback) but a solicitor pal asked me this question on Saturday:

If you own no TV and have no TV licence, can you still be deemed as liable as have a PC which is easily capable of picking up TV channels with a cheap set up from asda. He seemed to think the law was vague and said something like "any equipment capable of picking up" which makes every PC liable.

Why do I need a licence for my PC?
You only need a licence if you use your computer to watch programmes at the same time as they are being shown on TV.
Before now, this has not been a major problem as very few programmes are available simultaneously on air and online.
Computer users only needed a TV licence if they had a special video card that could receive TV signals. This is to stop people receiving TV programmes for free on their computer when they would have to pay to see them on a regular television.

That is comprehensive - I'll email that to the non-TV owner!

Wait fj - I don't use Pcs to watch TV so totally ignorant on this - but don't you just need a dongle these days that does the work of an internal card in old money (3 year ago technology?) Half seen them in Asda for a pittance.
