Default Hotbird from sky dish?

I would like to get some channels from Hotbird. Can you use a standard sky dish to get this?

What I mean is I don't want to put up a bigger dish, but wouldn't mind getting another sky dish.

I live next to edinburgh.

Yes a sky dish will work fine - for preference a zone 2 dish rather than the very small zone 1 dishes - theres not much rain fade allowance on the zone 1 s in Scotland!

This sounds very interesting! I live in Lancashire, north/west and would like to get some Italian channels...

My mates just told me that he has an old sky box and dish that I can have, would this setup work with hotbird for me? Also would I need a card for the box?

Thanks for any help! great site BTW

Yes, it will work to a limited extend. But the Sky box is designed to be only used for 28E. The symbol rates and FEC value on on a Sky box, are limited, and you can only have a maximum of 50 'other' channels.

You are better off getting a generic digital satellite box.

Thanks for getting back to me, so what you saying? Use the old dish from my pal, but buy a generic digital satellite box... yes?

What is a generic digital satellite box and what is the best kind to buy?

Sorry I'm new to this stuff.

A generic receiver is basically a non sky box. Far better and far more flexible than a sky box. Basic ones can be had for less than a hundred quid. Try the forum advertisers.

Try a Clarke Tech 3100+ just like a Technomate 5400CI+, but slightly cheaper. Southernsatellite had them in stock, for about 90 quid.

Hes on the payroll

Only kidding. From what i've read they are more or less the same boxes in board design, they just aren't as well known

Supposed to be very good boxes from what i've seen upto now

Are there varying qualities of sky LNB?

I am assuming that you must fit a standard sky LNB on a sky dish.

Can I request the engineer to install a more expensive sky lnb in the hope the signal from hotbird being maximised to reciever?

Also could you use something called a minoblock and this adaptor http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/40mm-LNB-Adapt...1%7C240%3A1318

to get astra 19.2 as well as hotbird on a sky dish, remembering I live in edinburgh?
