Question EX5000 Clone Update

Hi,

I recently bought an EX5000 as a present for a friend. From the guide posted on this forum, it appears to be a cloned box (heatsink on processor, packaging). I spoke to the dealer I got it from and he appeared to be unaware of the problem - it was from a shop dealing in many electricals, not just cable boxes. He said he would look into the problem and get back to me. After speaking to him again, he said he buys the boxes directly from Eurovox and they told him this was how all the boxes are being built now. He also said Eurovox are having some problems and probably won't be producing any more boxes in the future, so any boxes on the market are likely to be clones. Has anyone heard of Eurovox having problems?

I'm not really a gullible sort of person and he did offer me a full refund if I'm don't want it anymore, though aslong as it continues to work, I can't really see a problem. The main issue really is, will the box work and continue to work. I've read that updating cloned boxes with official firmware will brick them. What do you guys think? I have the feeling you'll tell me to get rid and get a genuine one, any recommendations of where I can purchase one? Or will the firmware update be ok? I advised my friend to update manually until I could verify a solution. One more thing, the guy said updating firmware won't invalidate your warranty (this info apparently coming from Eurovox) so if it does go tits up, you can still return the box for repair.

Thanks in advance

Only Clone units did and do have Heatsinks at the moment.

Genuine units are still available and will be into the future.
