You're best off with a singular Null modem cable serial 9 pin F to 9 pin F.
No adapters and Defo no gender changers.
If you need to go down the USB to Serial null modem cable route, If your using Vista, you may need a specialist driver. If I get time, I'll edit this post and add one in.

Edit: try this....driver= wch.cn/download/list.asp?id=65

Unhappy Re: help with starview 3

Guys,
I think Gar got sorted but I'm in exactly the same boat. I have an RS232 plus a gender changing cable. I got a driver disc with the RS232 but my PC won't read it.
I note your recommendation to get an RS 232 cross, but the only one I can find is female to female (as you recommend). However, my Box Super had a Male end and my PC has a Female end - so F to F won't get me connected.
Any suggestions?

newer laptops dont have the 9 pin serial I/O port (male end)

the port on your laptop might be the 15 pin vga output for a external monitor, this has a female end, so this wont work, and if you try to put the 9 pin male end in you will f*ck the lead up

you can buy a usb to 9 pin serial male adapter, but there is some issues trying to use these on some laptops, mostly driver issues

I have managed to get mine working on vista, but loads out there have had problems

suggest you find a desktop with the 9 pin serial I/O port and use xp

then use your db9f(female) to db9f NULL modem lead

yep, many have issues with using usb with laptops, also Vista, alot with both together lol

If it's your own stb and will only be flashing your own, as and when needed, bang all the files you need on a stick or disk grab yourself a f to f 9 pin null modem lead(couple of quid...DO NOT GO TO MAPLINS) and get yourself round to a trusted friends who has a desktop pc, just tell em it's a free view box that needs an update cos it's gone off and your tinternet's down.

Smile Re: help with starview 3

Thanks lads,
I've found a desktop with a 9-pin.
Off now to look for an RS232c (not easy to find).
If I get stuck, I may call on you again.
