Default Ex1000 or ex5000

sorry for so many posts guys but i am not sure which box to buy. want to purchase one tonight so any advice would be great. i want one which has tonnes of firmware etc available and has a EPG, user friendly aswell. i heard the EX1000 has no interactive menu or something so not sure if the EX5000 does. i am not to bothered about recording programmes and wont be spending any money on a hard drive or pvr. i have a dvd recorder anway so can always use that. im just looking for a box which is reliable, easy to use, has lots of software available, and has a good EPG for the whole day. cheers guys

I don't think there are many (if any) huge differences as far as the menus, epgs, and firmware availabilty go. The 1000 is slimmer and does not have a lcd screen unlike the 5000, this can come in handy if you experience problems as error codes can show up on the lcd screen. The 5000 also has ch + - buttons on the unit, handy when the remote has gone walk abouts!

I opted for the ex5000 mainly as I then had the option to go pvr if I wanted to without having to fork out a load more money to either upgrade or get a seperate pvr. Within a few days I bought myself a hard drive, its worth it for the pause function alone, that said I do have a kid so you may not get constantly interupted during the footy like me!

I would rec to pay the extra £10-£15 for the ex5000, if your dvd recorder goes tits up it'll only cost you £35 for a hard drive instead of £150+ for a new dvd recorder.

Don't take my word for it, haven't used a 1000! Hopefully a few peeps with give you their tuppence worth as well so you can make an informed decision

I think I'm right in saying both boxes were released this year hence the simularities under the hood (besides the obvious lack of pvr on the 1000).

Have you searched this forum btw? Not a week goes by where someone hasn't posed the same question as you, may find some more info on both boxes in prev threads.

Aint the PVR option of the 5000 a bit limited though, like you can only record the program you're watching..

I like my ex1000, works great, I dont see the point of the PVR option, if you miss something on Telly you can be sure its gonna be repeated or easilly available for download.. You cant even get your recordings off the 5000 to your PC ..

A twin tuner would be a welcome addition for some but I very much doubt they'd be selling for 100 notes if it had this. As it is I think it offers great vfm and it would only be a step backwards in recording for those who've had V+ or Sly+.

I don't really watch a great deal of tv tbh, use cable for live sports and the occasional film. I just record movies for a rainy day that are generally on late at night when I'm tucked up in bed anyway so never bothers me that I can only watch & record same channel. As I said, the pause function flicks my switch the most.
