Newbie who needs help on getting started...

Hi all!

I'm a newbie so please go easy on me...I've always dealt with c@ble tv (dboxes, pace boxes, programmers etc) but I'm now interested in moving over to satellite. However, everything seems so complicated...I feel like I did when I started out dealing with c@ble tv a few years ago.

Anyway, I know things will get easier for me once I get started so here goes...

These are my requirements:

- I would like a satellite kit which will allow me to receive just about all English Premiership Football. I'm not too fussed about anything else.
- I would specifically like this satellite to pick up Arabian TV (I'm not interested in European sats and so on...)
- I do not wish to have any adult/xXx channels. I know these are pretty prevalent in foreign countries with 24hr porn etc due to their more liberal attitude but I have young kids who I do not wish to be exposed to this.

Thus, my main requirement is to receive sport only.

Here's what I know so far from doing my research:

- I will need a motorised dish (minimum size of 180cm as I am in Central Scotland). This will allow me to receive Arabian TV (Showtime) which shows all EPL games.
- I will need a technomate 5400 HD receiver.
- I will need a b diablo cam with cas3 programmer.

Now, I'm pretty comfortable with the first two requirements as these seem to be easy enough to obtain. However, what is 'a b diablo cam with cas3 programmer'? Why is this needed and what does it allow you to do? Is anything missing from my list of things I need?

Also, is it possible to get a motor for a 180cm dish? So far I've only managed to find a motor supporting a dish up to 120cm in size.

Finally, once I have all of the required equipment, will it need to be installed professionally or is it easy enough to do a 'DIY' job? If I do manage to set-up the equipment will I need to do anything else like a subscription card or a programmed card or will it just be a matter of plug and play?

I apologise for the long-winded post and for my lack of knowledge but I would really appreciate any help and advice.

Wow what a question?

First off there is no way that you will get all EPL games, the only way is to subscribe to a service but even then you will only get a small percentage of games unless you pay in excess of £800 for a Sky Italia card and even then you will need a Sky italia receiver as they use NDS encryption.

You could buy a Diablo Light CAM and CAS3+ Programmer but this is a hack and is not guaranteed viewing plus you will only receive several games per week, and in foreign language on Thor and some of the late afternoon games on Eutelsat W2

As for the dish! 1.8 mtr is not big enough for receiption of Nilesat in Scotland, you will need a 2.4 mtr dish, 1.8 is fine for the midlands and south. Also you will find it near on impossible to motorise a dish of this size without paying a fortune to do so.

The Technomate 5400CI+ Super is standard def and not HD, for HD a Technomate 6800 or 6900 is needed.

Your reguirements will take a lot of money to acheive, plus some of it is not possible to do.

Thanks for the useful info southern. It seems as though the information I have been receiving is incorrect so I appreciate you putting me on the straight and narrow.

Ultimately, if I just want to watch EPL games mainly, is there any point in me trying to get foreign satellite then? Will the games that are shown not effectively be the same as I am getting through my c@ble box just now?

People buy a foreign system to get the 3pm games which are not shown on UK cable or satellite. Sky Italia shows many games but is expensive, DigitALB used to show 3pm EPL but don't anymore but the Tring package on the same satellite is surpose to start showing 3pm, but I would not trust this, as DigitALB were meant to show EPL this season but are not.

ART sports is again meant to start showing EPL but I have yet to see this confirmed.

That's why I had also heard southern - that DigitalB don't show them anymore and you can't really trust other channels as they could go off anytime.

I may just stick to V*rgin just now although I still do like the idea of getting satellite purely for the use of HD which is not yet possile with a h@cked c@ble box.

Kimi - you can forget Showtime in Scotland - the dish size required is completely unfeasible. You are probably looking at over 3m to get the 7W H tp's that carry Showtime.

Yeah Analogue...somebody told me that I'd need a 4m dish but I couldn't believe that! If I got a 4m dish, I think I'd have NASA space rockets landing in my back garden!
