Default I'm a newbie - please be gentle

Hi all

I'm totally new to this site. I hope you can forgive me if this topic has been mentioned loads of times. I looked at the stickys but they didn't make any sense to me. Here goes.......

I have a V+ box and have had it nearly 2.5 years. The person I bought it form 'tweaked' (if that is the right termanology) it.

I have had no problems with it for the last 2.5 years. Until Saturday.

I went to work and everything was working ok and when I came home later on in the day, the box was on channel 999 and when I tried to go to any pay channel a box came up on the screen saying that I was not subscribed to this channel.

I spoke to a work colleague who told me that for £25 he'll get my card up and running again.

I met up with him later on in the day and he took my card, plugged it into a card reader/writer that was connected to his laptop and a few clicks of the mouse later and hey presto he said "done". I took it home and it works fine again.

Is what he did easy to learn? Is the card reader/writer expensive? What kind of software is needed? Can anyone enlighten me as to how to do this myself so that I don't need to spend another £25 when it happens again.

Again, please be gentle with me as my termanology is not that great.

Kindest regards,

Adrian

Is not hard to learn had someone take me under their wing when i first joined and learned everything i needed to know in less than 2 days, setting up is a little expensive as you need reader/writers, unloopers, pc/laptop to run it from, all the software which is free but sometimes has issues with your OS on your pc/laptop, is a long winded process but worth it in the long run, once you get everything you need and have read the Novice Angel Guide then giz a shout on here most ppl will be willing to help you, although Nagra 3 (encryption system) is due out soon so you may be learning everything for nothing as i hear its unhacked so far

Funnily enough, I asked him if there is an expiry date on it and he said no. Hey ho. At least it is back up and running.

Yes, but firstly I had no idea at the time and secondly even if I had the equipment I wouldn't have known what to do with it.

I will probably take the advise from an earlier post that suggested I buy some equipment from fleetcomputersytems and try and do it myself next time.

Luckily i have a spare card (the original that came with my V Box) so I will be able to test my newly aquired skills with that card.

I'd like to join the conversation and ask a question. I think situation I'm in is some kind similar. Maybe not 100% but at least 5% which will still give me some anwsers as it's very difficult for me to breach trought all that information without any knowledge in the subject.

I posted it already in other thread, but forget to ask that question.

1. Can I use a DVB box from ntl on which contract have expired? I still have the old card with it.
2. Will it be as simple to sort out as thing that Adrian_London's case? Just change dates?
3. I heard I'll need to interfere with the box by Cutting Talkback? (What does it do. I was trying to google that, but with no joy). I understand it's some way for the box to comunicate with the "provider"?
4. I also know, that I'll need programer, unlooper and blank funcard. Purpose of programer is obvious. Unlooper is more mysterious device for me.
