Hi Guys
Wishing everyone a very happy new year 2009. I am a avid fan of indian channels in hotbird (13E) There are no hd broadcasts at the moment. My completely ignorant question is......is the picture Quality better when viewing sd broadcast through hd receiver+hdmi? I can see this is very basic, but excuse me. |

The picture quality output from an HD receiver with an SD broadcast is the same as it would be from an SD box.
However, Scart leads and other connection methods can sometimes degrade the picture, wheras HDMI should not. |

I thought most HD receivers upscaled the SD picture when viewed via HDMI?

The Technomate TM6900 super does upscale SD channels. Would think others do to.

It doesn't improve the quality though, does it?
Im currently watching an SD channel on a 42" LCD with 1080p capabilities through HDMI to TM6800HD. The info on the TM screen says 576i |

Only read the spec sheet from Technomate. Says it upscales (and I believe everything that I read) but not to what spec. Cant get near the TV at the moment so can't check.
By the way Robbo what does the TV say when you are watching an upscaled SD channel?

robbo, if you have a tv that does 1080p I'm surprised your don't have it set on the receiver to do 720p or 1080i
depends on the channels broadcast too as i bet some of the canal digital channels on 1west would look nice up scaled as they do on my lcd tv with sd receiver

Quite new to the HD lark, but there doesn't seem to be an option to change what upscaling is used. I have tried a few SD channels from 7W eg Fox series, MBC Max etc, and Digi+ on 16E and all reporting 576i. The DigitAlb picture quality is as crap as it usually was on my SD box.
Ahh got it now, I have to press a VFormat button on the TM remote to make it flick between 576i, 720i and 1080i, there doesn't seem to be any improvement in picture quality though.

Tried the Technomate this morning. Running it on a 1080i TV. The TV says the signal from the Technomate is a 1080i signal even though he receiver says it is a 576i signal. What the receiver says is the signal it is receiving not the signal it is sending out the HDMI cable. The TV will tell the HD signal it is receiving. Having said all of that the picture quality will often depend on the channel quality, ie production methods and no receiver will overcome some of the quality issues there.
