There are two sat providers in Canada and two in the US and of these, one in Canada and one in the US use nagra encryption ( shared technology ).
The Canadian sat provider ( bev) has 2 birds at 82W and 91W with a combined total of 650 TV channels. The US provider (charlie) has 2 main birds at 110W and 119W providing 650 TV channels and other birds at 61.5W, 118W, 129W and 148W adding another 600 channels, mainly ethnic/international and high def. Except for the 118W, all birds can be caught with an 18" dish bringing in 100% signal strength. Everything is wide open and we get all basic, speciality, PPV movies, PPV events, porn, etc. Both bev and charlie are transitioning from nagra 2 to nagra 3 but the word is out that nagra 3 has been cracked. When they made the move from nagra 1 to nagra 2 we were down for all of 8 hours. A single 18" dish with 2 lnb's cost about $30 and the FTA SD receivers are about $100 and FTA HD receivers are about $300. The FTA receivers are modified with software which is free and easily available. Last night we were hit with freezing every 10 minutes or so. Fixes were posted on the web within 5 hours. This system gets me Setanta Canada and Setanta US so most Saturday's I get the Premier League game I want |

Dont get your hopes up - Nagra 3 has been holding up very well here in Europe in the 18 months since it was introduced.

Based in Canada.
The single FTA receiver gets both the US and Canadian programming. Some brands throw up a screen when you enter a channel number common to both systems then you choose which channel you want. Most others throw an extra digit in front of the Canadian channel eg in US ch 400 is all Tennis channel but in Canada ch 400 is The Sports Network (TSN). In the FTA units the Canadian channel is 2400. I also get Globecast with a 33" dish at 97W. It also has Setanta as well as Dubai Sports which has a fairly international lineup of English football and rugby. Globecast brings in about 100 true FTA and another 50 encrypted channels but these units open all so we get 150 Globecast channels. In the southern US you don't get all the bev channels on 82W with an 18" dish and need to go bigger. Likewise in northern Canada you need a bigger dish ( 33" ) to get charlie 119. When bev and charlie moved over to nagra 2 here, Europe had still supposedly not cracked nagra 2. Reality is that after the US went nagra 2 we lost everything but within 8 hours fixes were released and both Canada and US were back up again. It seems some guys in Spain had cracked nagra 2 but for whatever reason chose not to open up European programming but shared this info with North America and it was used to open things up here. |

I am in Canada(Montreal) and am dieing to watch the tennis channel 400 on DN. I know DN is going N3 so I have held off even getting any FTA equipment. Is there a way to get the tennis channel through true FTA sats as opposed to encrypted only on Dish Network or DirectTV? I was hoping for a better way to watch this channel than having to subscribe from a US address and bring the receiver with me over the border. Any thoughts on this or will the N3 changeover prevent me from watching this channel? |
