You could always open up the console and clean the laser using a cotton bud and some cleaning fluid. Failing that, try adjusting the white cog at the back of the disc drive, that adjusts the angle of the laser and improves the reading of some games.

With alot of my Ps2's that i have had recently i clearly have had this problem myself and find it is really annoying, what you would have to do is adjust the laser a little bit and then test it, If it does not work then keep adjusting and make sure that the ps2 is cleaned inside with no dust or anything stopping it from working, If when adjusted the laser that it doesn't work then it could well be the laser itsself might of knackered out at some time. but firstly clean the ps2 and adjust the laser, before thinking about whether the laser is knackered.

Lasers are cheap on eBay. You can buy one for about £7.50 and they are easy to fit .
