Default help requested.

I am a total NOVICE at satellite things. I managed to get the dish up and sort of pointing in the right direction. I bought a box from my local DIY store, make METRONIC. In the book it says that there are some channels pre set. It gives a list (mostly french channels) but I would like to put in some more such as BBC, ITV etc. I understand that these are "free to air" which I am told is totally free and dont need cards etc.
How do I find a list of the numbers for these channels I think I can manage to set the programmes up as the instruction book is not TOO complicated and my partner does speak/read french. Can anybody help me and more to the point WIll somebody help me ??
Regards bob Cooper.(englishman in France)

You can find all the information you need on lyngsat:

Hi and welcome to TW.

You might well need a largish dish to [ick up the "terrestrial" British channels i.e. BBC, ITV, Ch4 and Five, because the most of them are on Astra 2 D, which has quite a narrow footprint.

If there are any ex-pats there and they can get the British channels, it would do no harm to have a look at the size of there dish and that would give you an idea what size you will need.

Good luck and I hope you are watching the British channels before lomg.

Very best regards Wez

Think you will need about 1 mtr dish though someone will confirm. Also sounds like you are not on astra 2 if you are getting mostly French channels. You may need to realign the dish. List 1 or 2 of the channels you are getting to confirm.

Hi People,
Thanks for the helpful replies. To clarify, the dish is pointing ok except for a "fuzzy" on some discovery channels; I am currently using a sky box(amstrad sky Digital DRX 400) with a blue card with yellow house but as I understand it this will be useless when I terminate my subscription, and I have to return the card. Now the euro has come near equal to the pound I am feeling the pinch a bit on my pension so economies have to be made (Sky must go). If somebody will tell me that the amstrad box will work without any card then I shall be delighted. I do only have this one card.

The sky box will continue to work just fine for the free channels. You wont have to return the card either.

Cancel Sky and keep what you have, ie Amstrad receiver will still bring in the free channels. You will just loose subscription channels. The card will keep C4 & C5 on the EPG listings, you will also have BBC and ITV channels.
